Who created Aluminium foil?
Robert Victor Neher was was born on the 2nd of February 1886 in Schaffhausen. Neher was a brilliant Swedish scientist who studied in law and economics from 1906 to 1910 at three different universities in Geneva, Zurich and Berlin. One of Robert's first uses with aluminium foil began when he tried to create aluminium balloons (the video above shows a LEAD balloon but it still floats), Roberts aluminium balloons where to replace gas balloons but he did not succeed on the project after numerous fails so Robert moved on. Aluminium balloons exist but are very small and are reinforced with a small layer of plastic so they don't tear easily. There have been no full scale models of aluminium hot air balloons yet as the material is to fragile.
Robert thought about ways he could use aluminum to profit himself and in 1912 he founded Dr. Lauber, Neher & Cie. which became a big success by manufacturing aluminium foil for companies to wrap their confectioneries in. Soon aluminium replaced tin foil and took over everything. By having aluminium instead of tin foil gave companies three advantages. Aluminum foil was easier and cheaper to manufacture, aluminum also had the advantage that the metal was not traded like on the stock market like tin and thus the price did not constantly vary making it easy to make a reasonable cost calculation.
As Aluminium foil hit the market many companies changed from wrapping with tin to aluminium it was a rousing success and Robert was making lots of money, aluminium became a main packing device lining ice-cream containers, chip packets, chocolates and lollies this wrapping material was a revolution in its own right but its founder was not to last much longer, 6 years after the opening of the Dr. Lauber, Neher & Cie company Robert Neher died on the 21st of November 1918. Roberts work continues to this day and his use of aluminium for household needs has changed the way companies and people live even if its in the slightest way.
